The kid’s have been making their own play ship and I couldn’t resist contributing. These are made of an old camping mat that was badly torn and scuffed. I gave it a good scrub and used the least damaged parts. I made them 2 layers thick and instead of gluing I’ve lashed them together with long lengths of cord with the idea that it can all be reused one day.
The centre of the wheel is an empty ribbon reel and the split pins have tetrapak washers and are just for show really. They have plenty of scuff marks but that just adds to the character I think. I hope they’ll be strong enough to hold their shape and soft enough to get thrown about without hurting anyone.

Make More Make Believe
I’m a big advocate for children’s imaginative play. I also don’t think they need a huge amount of ‘stuff’ in order for it to be an enriching experience – it’s more important that they have the right environment in which to feel free and comfortable to explore. In the case of my own children I have found that they get as much from bits and pieces lying around as they ever have from anything I have made them. I have come to learn that I make ‘fun’ things as much as for myself as for them and with that realisation I am also freer to have fun.
